First thought: This might be a "character piece" and the song is from the point of view of a fictional character, and not necessarily Sarah's (or Gus'/Jamie's) feelings. Secondly, I think you might be misinterpreting the song slightly (or I am). The way I see it, the "I thought I was acting" refers to her acting sad. not happy.
